Roger Federer will take on the
challenge of the local lad Gilles Simon in the fourth round on Sunday, the 2nd
June. Federer is 3-2 against Simon having defeated him in the last three
meetings on hard courts and clay. Federer is yet to drop a set in this
tournament. Simon had a grueling five set victory over Sam Querrey in the last
round.
Federer has sometimes been defeated
by big hitters who on their day manage to keep unforced errors under control.
Simon does not play that type of game. He sends back opponent’s power shots by
diverting the ball to the other corner following the laws of reflection. His
game is quite predictable. He was quite successful with his style of play five
years ago when he made entry into the top ten and defeated Federer, Rafael
Nadal and Novak Djokovic in 2008. Since then his game has gone down and he has
had no victories over the top four.
Simon will have the home advantage,
but Federer has had no disadvantage playing in any part of world against any
opponent. It is difficult to see either Simon defeating Federer or Federer
defeating himself before a partisan crowd. Federer has to have an exceptionally
bad day to send himself out of the tournament.
